Facial chemical peels help to remove the old, dead layer of skin cells on the skins surface to reveal the healthier, plumper, younger skin cells underneath. We offer superficial and medium skin peels to provide different levels of potency and address different concerns. Superficial peels work on the outermost layers of skin, minimal peeling is experienced with this treatment. Medium Strength peels penetrate more layers of skin to deliver powerful ingredients at a deeper level. Mild peeling usually occurs. They target damaged skin cells, moderate to severe scarring, deep wrinkles, and skin discolouration.
Chemical Peel Treatment Guide & FAQS
AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) which can include glycolic acid (from sugar cane), citric acid (from citrus fruits), lactic acid (from sour milk) and malic acid (from apples), promote the exfoliation of the upper most layer of the skin allowing healthier cells to come to the top and improving the texture and feel of the skin. Salicylic acid promotes exfoliation, unclogs blocked pores by breaking down oils, and is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory so is particularly appropriate for acne prone skin. This can also be useful for the back and chest. We use other ingredients such a retinol which act in very similar ways.
Chemical facial peels sound much scarier than they are! You will always be commenced on a superficial peel at the start of your treatment course to ensure your skin has time to become used to the increased exfoliation, so this means very little downtime, redness or peeling, if any at all, after your first peel. With our stronger strength peels, you may experience a light tingling sensation and warmth which quickly settles.
With some of our stronger strength peels, your skin may begin to feel a little tight and dry, any peeling usually begins on day 2/3 and may last up to 7 days. A superficial peel should not result in any visible peeling. There is a small risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which can be reduced by following the correct aftercare.
Peels are not suitable:
- If you are suffering from any skin infection near the treatment area or if you’re feeling unwell (even a cold).
- If you have any allergies to any ingredients within the solutions used.
- If you are taking medications that cause photosensitivity.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If you are currently or have recently completed a course of Roaccutane (acne treatment) in the last 18 months.
Chemical peels can trigger the cold sore virus, if you are a sufferer, you must advise your practitioner in advance.
The whole process will be discussed with you at your initial free consultation at our Margate clinic, and your Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, Lucia, will carry out an in-depth assessment to ensure you receive the best possible treatment.
A course of 6 or more is recommended, however even a one off will leave your skin healthy and glowing! We have a wide range of chemical peel options to choose from, your practitioner can discuss your needs before your appointment or at a separate consultation if you would prefer.
